Since 2005, Kathryn “Kitsie” Emerson has interpreted wayang performances into English through running text projected for audiences in person and online.
This simultaneous approach follows the spontaneity of the dhalang and gives audiences access to dialogue, humour, and interpretation as the performance unfolds. The dhalang’s voice remains the voice of the performance.
