THE LONTAR PROJECT · 2013–2014
Ki Purbo Asmoro and Kathryn Emerson created a comparative study of classical, contemporary interpretive, and condensed wayang styles. Makutharama and Sesaji Raja Suya were each recorded in three styles, resulting in six documented performances.
The seven-volume set includes Javanese transcripts, Indonesian translations, English translations with introductory material and extensive notes, and gamelan scores. English volumes include Rama’s Crown and The Grand Offering of the Kings. The original project also includes performance DVDs with English and Indonesian subtitles.

Kathryn Emerson completed this dissertation at Leiden University in 2016. An Indonesian translation, Pembaharuan Wayang untuk Penonton Terkini, was published by ISI Press in 2018. Contact Ekalaya for guidance on accessing the research and publications.
